Toronto skunks

Skunks have distinctive black and white coloring and are easy to recognize. A skunk's bold coloration is a warning of its potent attack. Skunks can spray a powerful scent up to 15 feet using the glands below their tail. This spray actually burns an attacker's eyes, causing temporary blindness. The smell is too much for most animals, and becomes a strong warning against future attacks. Skunks are omnivores which means they will feed on almost anything including small rodents, worms, insects, grubs, carrion, fruit, garbage, and pet food left outdoors.

Skunks are sometimes called polecats because of their visual similarity to the European polecat (Mustela putorius), a member of the Mustelidae family. Although the most common fur color is black and white, some skunks are brown or gray, and a few are cream-colored. All skunks are striped, even from birth. They may have a single thick stripe across back and tail, two thinner stripes, or a series of white spots and broken stripes (in the case of the spotted skunk). Some also have stripes on their legs.
